IN CHARACTER
Name: Clark Kent / Kal-El
Canon: Man of Steel
Canon Point: End of the movie, shortly after going in to work at The Daily Planet.
Age: 33
History: "I grew up in Kansas, General. I'm about as American as it gets."
Personality: Clark is genuinely the sort of person who does the right thing because it's the right thing to do. He's generally honest and straight-forward, and completely earnest in his intentions. While he's just settling into who he wants to be in some ways, he has an iron-clad sense of morality, and genuine compassion and empathy for those around him. He might not be human, but his humanity is one of his most endearing features. He has a wry sense of humor and is generally soft-spoken and gentle, even as Superman.
That said, Clark stands firmly by his convictions. He can be stubborn and headstrong, and while he tries his best to be respectful, he expects the same in return. He trusts people, and always hopes that they'll make noble choices, but understands better than anyone that those choices aren't always easy to make. Clark is someone who really wants to believe that people can be inspired, beyond fear and doubt, to do good. He's always wanted to do something important and worthwhile with his life; Superman is an extension of that, uninhibited by his own (not unreasonable) fears. Even in his civilian identity, he does what he can.
Clark will always act to help and protect others when he's able, regardless of the cost, without thinking twice. As someone who spent a large part of his life hiding everything that he was, he's actually fairly good at blending in and keeping quiet. He's careful enough to falsify his identity and keep his head down but, the moment someone is in trouble, Clark feels compelled to get himself involved - and is subsequently forced to cut all ties and disappear. It's a pattern by which he's lived most of his life.
Unfortunately, that means Clark has spent a large part of his life somewhat restless, lonely and isolated, feeling like he fit in almost nowhere. He was raised by loving parents who did everything they could for him, but his generally quiet and bookish nature, as well as the rumors of his strange abilities, marked him as an outcast among his peers. It's not that Clark is never angry or never tempted to lash out; his emotions are about as human as anyone else's, but he doesn't allow himself to act on them in a way that could harm others. It's not a fight that he would win in any way that's important to him. When he does let himself lose his temper, it's usually on inanimate objects, or those who can actually stand against him. And if you push the right buttons? Clark really does have a temper.
There are very few people he trusts with everything, and Clark tends to look to them for support and guidance in times of conflict. Though he didn't know her long, Lois is an especially important person to him - she was never afraid of him. She found his secret on her own, and made the choice to protect it even after it led to her arrest. Lois is there for him at his best, and ultimately helps him save the world, but she's also there for him at his worst.
Clark values life more than anything. At one point, he's forced into a corner, and has to choose between killing Zod or allowing him to kill a family. It's the first - and hopefully last - time he's ever killed someone. While he had no other viable option at the time, the shock and guilt of that one act isn't something he'll ever forget. It's an action that will weigh heavily on him for the rest of his life. The loss of so much - the destruction of Metropolis, Kansas, and the total loss of Krypton all at once - are all things that he carries with him, buried deep. He's the last of his kind, and even now what he knows what - and who - he is, he'll never know his people, and in some ways he's directly responsible for that.
Still, this doesn't change who Clark is and what he stands for. He'll always do the best he can to be a force for good in the world.
Abilities/Skills: According to the movie, Krypton's environment was much harsher than that of earth, and so Kryptonian physiology adapted accordingly. Clark's abilities developed (or over-developed) due to Earth's far more nurturing environment - more oxygen, lower gravity, etc - and his ability to absorb radiation from the Earth's sun, far younger than Krypton's own. This radiation fuels all of his abilities, and he's able to retain it for a period of time without being in direct contact with the source.
Clark's abilities include superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and endurance. He's basically invulnerable to most earthly dangers, including military weaponry and extremes of heat or cold. While he does need oxygen to survive, he needs far less of it than a human, and is capable of surviving unprotected in open space.
His senses are greatly enhanced as well. He has the ability to pinpoint specific sounds and hear over great distances, as much as hundreds or thousands of miles. He has telescopic vision, and can see through most materials present on Earth. He's also able to shoot red lasers from his eyes, and is capable of controlling the intensity of the heat they produce. He's shown using them in battle, and also to cauterize a wound.
He can fly faster than the speed of sound, and while his exact top speed isn't stated, it's probably a little above Mach 10. (Considering that he flew halfway around the world in what couldn't be more than an hour.)
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths
- Is literally Superman.
- More seriously, Clark's protective nature combined with his abilities make him a pretty natural combatant. However, he doesn't seem to have any formal combat training, and generally relies on his abilities in a fight.
- Clark is pretty smart, both in terms of being well-read and educated enough to work for The Daily Planet, and also in terms of having traveled extensively and worked a number of odd jobs in the past.
- Clark's empathy is the largest restriction on his abilities and what he does with them. He's particularly strong-willed, to the point of being nearly incorruptible.
Weaknesses
- Clark is basically at human strength in his homeworld's environment - and the same is presumably true of alien environments that are similarly harsh, because they already account for his enhanced strength and so forth. His abilities are fueled by the absorption of solar energy from a yellow sun, and while he retains those abilities for a while, he will lose them rapidly in the presence - or simulated presence - of much older stars, like a red sun.
- He also seems to effected by extremely high voltages of electricity. It might not break his skin, but it definitely hurts.
- Really not kidding about that temper. While Clark tends to walk away from more mundane situations that get on his nerves, he won't hesitate to, say, vindictively skewer your eighteen-wheeler with telephone poles. He tends to keep a lot of his more negative emotions bottled up, and when they do come out, it's not pretty.
- Kryptonite, usually described as an irradiated piece of his dead homeworld, is pretty widely known to be Superman's weakness. While it isn't used in the Man of Steel movie, it's shown to be present in the DCEU and is likely to maintain its usual effects.
- Magic is a notable vulnerability in most incarnations as well, and while there's no evidence for or against it in this instance, I'm going to assume that it's effective unless proven otherwise.
Items:
- One suit of clothing (button-up shirt, jeans, tie)
- One pair of glasses
- One briefcase (containing paper, pens, wallet, keys, phone)
