[ The kittens have been nestled into some extra blankets and sun lamps that will hopefully suffice until the ship is fixed. A couple of them seem to prefer to climb on his shoulders, but Clark doesn't mind. ]
Hey, thanks for... [ He turns away from the kittens, trailing off when he gets a good look at Eggsy. The scars are new, but he recognizes the face immediately. It's hard to forget when you watch someone die.
There's a flash of pain in his expression, and Clark swallows hard against it. He clears his throat. ]
Thanks for coming by. [ He nudges his glasses back up. He doesn't know if Eggsy recognizes him, or even saw him back then.
Stark seems almost normal in comparison, even if he's not what Clark expected. Clark dusts his hands off against his uniform pants and takes a few steps closer so he can crouch down and pet Stark. ] I thought you said he was a dog.
[Eggsy doesn't know Clark, at least not officially, but he's seen him around. He thinks he's familiar in a way that reminds Eggsy of things he doesn't want to think about, of events that he's trying to move past for himself and Bruce both.
He sees that little flash of pain, and his smile fades.]
Yeah, he's a dog. I think. I mean he's some kind of dog, acts like one mostly.
[He drops down next to them both, petting the top of Stark's head.]
Most people are afraid to get close to him, not you though.
I... Sorry. [ Not the smoothest recovery, but he can tell that Eggsy noticed, and it probably looks like he was staring at a scar for no particular reason.
Clark drops his gaze and holds out a hand for Stark to sniff at. ]
Anyway, it's hard to be afraid of these big puppy eyes. [ He smiles down at Stark, then looks at Eggsy again. ] You don't seem afraid either. You just took him in, not knowing what he is? Where did he come from?
[ A cat that's been hiding up by his collar begins to crawl down his arm to investigate Stark. Clark lets her - she seems to be the bravest of the bunch, and he wants to make sure that Stark is safe to be around the kittens. ]
[Eggsy was mostly trying not to stare, honestly, Clark was large and handsome and playing with kittens and his dog. Yeah, totally trying not to stare.]
He's smart, yeah? That's why I ain't afraid. He was just sittin' there, lookin' at me, watchin' me. Stark can't speak, but it's like he tells you what he's thinkin' just by lookin' at you. So I traded a few diamonds for him to the person that had him. Was on one of our stops. The guy told me that he'd do whatever I said, and that he could take care of 'imself. I told Stark he was free to go, and he followed me.
[Stark settles back into what constitutes a sitting position for the alien dog, watching the kitten carefully, calmly.]
Sometimes, he gets on me, yeah? Lays on me when I'm up too late on my phone. I honestly don't know if he's a dog or what or if he's quiet cause someone made him this way. [Eggsy's brows furrow.] But he stays and I'll take care of him til he goes.
[ Clark lets the kittens move in to investigate Stark at their own pace, but by now he doesn't expect any kind of incident. He's mostly watching the animals interact because it's cute.
Even if he couldn't tell Stark was fairly calm and well-mannered, Eggsy doesn't seem like the type to take a risk if he wasn't. The way he talks about Stark and how he came into his care says a lot about who he is. As simple as the story is, it's the sort of natural compassion that reminds Clark of just why he admires people so much.
When he smiles, he's looking at Eggsy. ] I can see why he likes you.
